More on MySpace.com

2News contacted MySpace.com and asked them about what measures they take to ensure a safe online environment for its users. Here are their replies.

Do you regularly screen for content and remove objectionable material? With millions of users, can you realistically expect to remove all explicit material?

Although MySpace is an entirely free website, the company currently uses 1/3 of its workforce to scan, screen and process customer care requests and inquiries. This dedicated customer support team provides members and parents with a mechanism to report on inappropriate content posted to the site while allowing the company to rapidly respond to safety issues. In addition, MySpace uses an automated search engine as well as staff to sift through the tens of millions of profiles on the site to identify profiles that may belong to underage users and to delete those profiles.

Kids are posting their personal information such as names, addresses and names of schools. Is MySpace doing anything to protect kids from internet predators?

MySpace’s terms of use agreement prohibits -- and MySpace discourages its users from -- posting telephone numbers, street addresses, or last names to the site. MySpace encourages all members to recognize the public nature of the Internet and exercise caution when providing any personal information.
MySpace.com recognizes the anonymous nature and safety concerns the Internet poses and consequently treats safety and privacy of its more than 50 million users very seriously. MySpace operates under a comprehensive series of guidelines and solutions, which we believe represent the best practices in our industry. MySpace actively works with and has the support of Parry Aftab, executive director of Wiredsafety.org, the world’s largest online safety and help group. MySpace embraces recommendations from this important advocacy organization, including a set of safety tips which are available on the website for both users and parents. With the cooperation of Parry Aftab and Wired Safety.org, MySpace posts user safety tips on the site. All safety tips are located in the bottom tool bar of every page of the site under “Safety Tips”.

Do you ever remove sites if parents request it?

When issues are brought to the company’s attention, the company replies swiftly and thoroughly to address issues at hand. If members or parents wish to report a violation of the site's terms of agreement, they can email customercare@myspace.com.

Since myspace is not only used by adults but also young ones, it’s good to know that the myspace teams guarantee a safe online environment for its user. Very interesting to know that from the posted information pointed out regarding the terms and agreements of myspace that they discourage every user not to put much about personal information especially for the kids to protect them from internet predators. Thank you for sharing these ideas. I’ll try to share it with other friends and parents in my myspace.
